Difference Engine

‘Difference Engine’ highlights the compositional strengths of Topology’s saxophone player, John Babbage and bassist Rob Davidson.

This release features the long-awaited recording of ‘φX174’, which is a consistent crowd favourite at live shows. It and the title track masterpiece ‘Difference Engine’, are both by Babbage. This new release offers even more with the earthy, fine rhythms and exceptional melancholic sax work of Davidson’s ‘Exterior’ and very special tracks by local composer Lynette Lancini.

The title track in three parts introduces melodies and rhythms of cinematic dimensions. ‘Difference Engine’, both serious but optimistic, is a perfect example of the fine precision Topology specialises in. While the three parts interconnect and work brilliantly as a masterpiece in composition and performance, there is more to the story. Topology’s saxophonist John Babbage may just be related to the inventor of the computer, Charles Babbage. Babbage, whose “special” personality prevented his mechanical computers being completed, was vindicated when his 1820s designs, “Difference Engines” were made into working devices in 1989 by the London Science Museum. John Babbage has made music from the idea of these mechanical computers, using notes and rhythms in place of gears and wheels.
